HISTORY OF THE FALSE BAY TUG-OF-WAR CLUB
The Club was founded in 1976 after the amalgamation of the Philippi and Cape Flats Tug-of-War Clubs. From 1977 until 1982 the Club was inactive, and only started practicing again in 1983 for the 1984 season.

This year, the Club celebrates its 26th year of existence since the Club reactivated in 1984.

Tug-of-War in the Philippi Flats area has been practiced since 1968 and has indeed had a splendid history. Many Springboks, Junior Springboks and Western Province team members have come from within our ranks through the years. Before the False Bay Tug-of-War Club came into being, the Philippi and Cape Flats Club had already jointly delivered 19 Springboks. Up until 2008, the False Bay Club has delivered 43 Springboks, of which 11 were ladies. Apart from a large amount of Western Province team members who have been chosen from our Club, the Club has also delivered 27 Junior Springboks.

Ladies Tug-of-War has been practiced at our Club since 1976, but only really became active in 2002. The 2007 season was a good one for our Ladies team, and they won many medals. In each of the 3 Western Province Ladies teams who won gold medals at the 2007 South African Championships, half of the team members came from within our club ranks – indeed an excellent achievement!!!

Also, in the Ladies National Team which competed in Stenningsund in Sweden in 2008, 4 of the ladies were members of our club.

Stenningsund 2008 – in this pull, pullers number 2,4 and 8 are
ladies from our club, namely Claudia Rix, Kim Carstens, and Alicia
Freiboth.

Although our club is very small, men’s Tug-of-War within our Club remains fundamentally sound. We are especially proud of the following achievements which were obtained at the 2007 South African Championships:

• 7 False Bay members were in the 720+kg Western Province team which won a gold medal
• 7 False Bay members were in the 720kg Western Province team which won a silver medal
• 8 False Bay members were in the 680kg Western Province team which won a gold medal.
• 7 False Bay members were in the 640kg Western Province team which won a silver medal.
• 8 False Bay members were in the 600kg Western Province team which won a silver medal.

During 2010, 2 of our ladies and 3 of our male members were once again asked to be members of the National Team. They were : Claudia Rix, Kim Carstens, Charl Vermeulen, Adriaan Rix and Gerhard Freiboth.
